Project Overview

  • Site name: Hangars at the airport of Sigonella
  • Location: Lentini
  • Start date: 2018
  • LMV scope: Design, production and assembly on site of two hangar in metallic carpentry

LMV has participated in the realization of two hangars at the Military Aeronautic Airport of Sigonella, as a part of an important infrastructural project aimed at enhancing the terminal’s operative structures.

The operation included the construction of high technical complexity buildings, designed to meet the requested aeronautic military sector standards.

Aeronautical structures

The project included the realization of two main hangars, named P407 and P655, with plant dimensions of, respectively, 108×45 and 105×52 metres and height between 18 and 20 metres.

Both the structures are next to dedicated service areas, named backshop, for operational and maintenance activities.

The load-bearing structures are built in S355JR painted steel, with systems assembled using high resistance fasteners, able to guarantee reliability and durability over time. Hangars are composed of 12 to 14 reticular trusses, each with 52 meters of light, designed to assure high structural performances and extensive free spans.

Attics and coverage are completed with corrugated sheet metal cladding and technical closure systems, while internal and external areas include accessory elements like parapets, walkways, stairs, caged ladder and embossed metal sheet, functional to safety and spaces management.

LMV supplied and assembled a total of about 1800 tons of metallic carpentry, directing all the operational phases from design to installation on site.

The process distinguished itself for the high accuracy level requested and for the typical complexity of air transport infrastructures.
