Project Overview
- Site name: Himera Viaduct reconstruction – A19 highway
- Location: Sicily
- Start date: 2019
- LMV scope: Production and assembly on site of metallic carpentry and accessory works for the realization of the antinoise barriers.
Himera viaduct reconstruction project on A19 Palermo-Catania highway represents a strategic infrastructural operation for the restoration of mobility in Sicily.
After the collapse in 2015, caused by a landslide that has compromised the bridge load-bearing pillars, connection between Palermo and Catania has suffered a severe interruption, with important consequences on the area’s mobility.
Reconstruction of a strategic infrastructure
LMV was involved in the rebuilding of Himera viaduct through the realization of three new spans, two 70 meters long and one, in the center, of 130 meters, designed to guarantee safety, reliability and durability over time.
The main beams reach a maximum height of approximately 6,5 meters, testifying the structural complexity of the work.
The total supply amounts to about 1650 tons, 1300 tons of which are intended for the main deck, as well as the temporary carpentry needed for construction phases, such as cutwater, tail beam and temporary pile.
For the installation operations six systems of incremental launching were used, with dedicated equipment supplied by LMV, including:
- Winch with ropes of approximately 1 km of length
- Roller with a capacity of 500 tons
- Sliders with a capacity of 500 tons
- Anchoring systems for the assembly on site of the structure
